Transpersonal Psychology promotes greater human potential!

Nicholas Poulus, 73, passed away peacefully on August 26th.

Definition of Transpersonal Psychology: Transpersonal psychology "is concerned with the study of humanity's highest potential, and with the recognition, understanding, and realization of unitive, spiritual, and transcendent states
of consciousness". Issues considered in transpersonal psychology include spiritual self-development, self beyond the ego, peak experiences, mystical experiences, systemic trance and other sublime and/or unusually expanded experiences of living. [Wikipedia].
Transpersonal psychology combines a variety of approaches in psychology, including  cognitive psychology and humanistic psychology, along with other disciplines, including Eastern and Western philosophy, mysticism, mindfulness and the world’s religions.

Various well-known psychologists pioneered transpersonal psychology.  The Swiss psychologis,Carl Jung, was at the forefront of this discipline.  Abraham Maslow was also an early pioneer in this field of human potential and investigation.
Transpersonal psychology attempts to describe and integrate spiritual experience within modern psychological theory and to formulate new theory to encompass such experience. Types of spiritual experience examined vary greatly but include mysticism,  altered states of consciousness, trance, past life regression, backgrounds of religions, cheiromancy, the Law of Attraction, astrological aspects, Ayurvedic, NLP, Acupuncture, massage and many other alternative health treatments.

About Us

We are all in this together – and we are glad you are visiting our site. This is our online meeting place, where we announce our meetings, organize our activities, share ideas, and publicize our meetings. Our organization, located in the Syracuse, New York area, was started over 30 years ago. Co-founders Dale and Nancy Gallagher gathered people from near and far into their home to host the original meetings (that sometimes lasted more than a day!)  One of the organization's first presenters was Houston Smith, formerly a professor at Syracuse University, a reknowned expert on world religions.

We now meet once a month, almost always on a Saturday night.  We usually begin with a potluck at 6:00 with speakers presenting on a variety of transpersonal topics after dinner.  More socializing and informal discussion of the topic occurs after the meetings. You do not need to be a member to join us.  All are welcome.  Members and guests contribute $5:00  at each meeting they attend.  For those members who desire a printed and mailed copy of the newsletter there is a fee of $15.00. This helps pay for printing, postage and rent at various venues.  The meetings are more often held in members' homes, however.  Each year we have a Holiday Party and an End-of-the-Year Picnic. We do not meet in July and August.

Our Work

We gather together to share knowledge, experiences and comaraderie. Whether you’re eager to share your area of expertise with us or to gain knowledge and experiences, here’s the place to do it.  We honor the existence of transpersonal experiences.  Through psychology we learn to expand toward a fuller and richer understanding of the full range of human experience. Through the spiritual disciplines we incorporate insights about human development, suffering, and healing, and methods to deal more skillfully with the psychological issues that arise during the spiritual search. The central concept in Transpersonal Psychology is self-transcendence, or a sense of self-identity which is more unified with the whole. The root of the term, transpersonal or literally "beyond the mask," refers to this self-transcendence. We work and play to grow in consciousness.  We delve into the sciences of cognition, consciousness, and the paranormal. Integral health theories and practices are explored. Our meetings are also often infused with meditation, poetry and literature. The world's spiritual and wisdom traditions are investigated and shared.

Join Us

Whether you are new to transpersonal psychology or a practitioner of one of its disciplines, or a curious truth-seeker, we invite you to join us. We welcome new ideas and value input from members. Many of our program presenters come from the ranks of our membership; others are often practitioners of various disciplines with a transpersonal psychology bent.

Host a Meeting  We are often in need of a place to host our meetings.  If you would like to volunteer your home, we would be very grateful.
